Why BF3 gives me hope in gamer humanity

Well all of you know that I'm a BF fan boy, and only grudgingly moved onto CoD but now that the new entry into the series is out, and I've finally been able to buy the damn thing, it's made me realize somethings. (This entire entry isn't meant to be taken very seriously) (Also all the battlefield quotes are taken from actual experience)

1.The existence of kindness

Lesson from CoD:
New player-Yay, I finally got the game all my friends have been talking about, it's a brand new world! Oh wow, look at these graphics! Oh no I'm getting shot at! Oh no I'm dead!"..."Why is that guy crouching on my head over and over, what the heck is that about?" "Oh no problem I'm back again! Oh wait..a random explosion just killed me, oh well!"
*Match ends*
Douchebag player(roughly 80% of the people who play CoD)- El oh el! I owned you n00b, I made you my bitch, and you're gay, el oh el, go kill yourself hahahahahah"

Battlefield's take-
New player-"Hey guys, this is my first time playing battlefield, is it any good?"
Squad leader-"Hell yeah man, it's fun as shit"
NP- "You can fly helocopters?"
Squad member B-"Yeah, I'm in one now and I need a gunner, I'll come pick you up"
NP-"Oh cool thanks"
Squad member B-"Alright hop in quickly, I'm getting shot at"
NP- "I can't figure out how to do it, just leave so you don't die!"
SmB-"It's no biggy, I'll respawn if I do, just press B"
NP-"oh you blew up...I'm really sorry"
SmB-"Really, it's not a big deal, the chopper will respawn, you can try flying it since our team doesn't seem to actually care about the damn thing"
NP-"This is awesome, I'm flying! I'm doing a backflip!"
*ascawyghost observes his squad's chopper do half a backflip before hitting a mountain and violently exploding*
NP-"Uh...sorry. I don't think I want to fly, I'll just keep killing you"
SmB-"How are you going to get better if you don't keep trying? Get the fuck in here"

While this whole event may not seem like that big of a deal, for a gamer that started off in computer gaming before switching to a console, the culture of each system's online gaming is very very different. Computer gamers have (in my experience) always been more open to new players, welcoming them warmly and helping them get accustomed to the game. Console gamers on the other hand seem to almost NEED to be complete and utter tools to new players. In a subculture that started off being socially ostracized by the mainstream, gamers need to stay close as opposed to hating one another. BF3 has given me hope that console gaming will one day reach the same awesomeness that computer gaming has had, an actual culture of gamers having fun.

2.Self sacrifice
CoD lesson
Veteran player-Alright, I'm playing domination so I KNOW I need to go to these points and capture them...but fuck that, I don't want to die even though our team is losing. I'm going to run around and shoot people, and if I die doing that, I'm going to just start throwing flashbangs at my own team, because that's what this game is all about!

BF3 lesson-
Squad leader-Alright guys, we've got a tank on A, SmB, could you fly in and take it out?
SmB-Uh...NP is still flying and I don't think he's ready for that yet.
NP-No! I can do it!"
SL-Ghost?
Ghost-I'm pinned down at B, but yeah I'll push through.
*Ghost sprints into fire, pulls out RPG and fires at tank before being torn apart*
SL-Alright awesome, tank is down, moving to B. Good job Ghost
Ghost-No problem, just spawned on you as medic, let's kick this pig.
NP-Weeeee!!!!
*explosion heard in distance*
SmB-Try to avoid trees next time. But good job! We were in the air for like 2 minutes that time.

Again, it may not seem like much but having players willing to lower their stats (even slightly) for a team win is important. CoD was a cesspool of players who only cared for themselves. BF is a return to what war games were all about, a realistic rendition of what war IS. You do what you need to, to ensure the mission objective is secured. And while we're talking about teams winning...

3. Team work is not dead
CoD:
Player1-Alright, it looks like most of their team is at point B, we need to get to point C...so we have to go through them. Uh...someone throw a flashbang?
Player2-Yeh I got it.
*..bang*
P1-alright cool, you threw it straight at me.
P2-lol, fucking newb.

BF3
Sl-Ghost you in the little bird?
Ghost-Hell yes I am.
Sl-where is the second one?
NP- I'm flying it!
SmB-Under the ocean.
Sl-...alrighty. Ghost could you do a quick strafing run on B? I'm getting shot at but I don't know where the fucker is.
Ghost-Mhm...Alright you got what looks like a squad on top of the warehouse, strafing now...aight. Two are dead, two just jumped down.
SL-Yep, got em in my sights...they're down. Keep an eye on that tank?
Ghost-..tank? Fuck. Chopper down...running to you now. That's embarrassing.
SmB-No worries, NP just rammed it to death with the second little bird.
NP-I was trying to shoot it.
SmB-and you did. With the entire chopper. And our burning corpses.
NP-Sorry.
Sl-Well..the tank is dead, that's all that matters, Where are you ghost?
Ghost-Pinned down at C, my parachute was possessed and threw me in the middle of their entire team. Probably not going to last so I'll just spawn on you.
Sl-Fuck that, I'm on my way to you now, stay alive and we'll push them back.
*intense fire fight follows*
Ghost-Whelp, we capped em out just gotta kick them while they're down.
Sl-That's how we do.

All of these lessons more or less had something to do with team work. But in online games that is (at least in my humble opinion) the most important thing a developer can do. Make a game where players not only NEED to work together, but want to do so as well. Humans are social creatures, ad we naturally want to belong to a tribe. CoD made gaming into this weird creature where every man was for himself. Sure, you COULD work together and do amazing, but you could also be a lone wolf and do just fine. BF on the other hand? You want to work together just because when everything goes smoothly, it's fucking awesome. And when shit hits the fan, and you're pinned down, you look forward to having your squad come back you up. Even if it's just a new guy who is going to help you out by ramming a helocopter into a tank.

  1. Reading this in the library was a bad idea because I wanted to laugh my loud, obnoxious Aliena-laugh. However, I feel the need to play BF3 now if the general consensus is to be good to newbies. ^^;
