(Not finished yet)
Recently I have begun to wonder about what evolutionary benefit (if any) emotions have. It seems to me that a complete lack of most emotions (things like fear, love for our mates/children being exceptions) would be far more beneficial.
Instead of being pushed to the brink of suicide by sadness/depression, we would just constantly strive to find a mate.Anger can lead to exceedingly stupid reactionary decisions, and can fairly easily get you killed.
The moderately amusing thing about this all would be the fact that in general, we tend to think of our ability to feel emotions as one of the things that separate us from the "lesser" animals. But I fail to see how that difference is a positive one.Our single best evolutionary trait is our ability to use reasoning and logic... and that advantage is removed with emotion in the way. Without them, most war would cease to exist (increases the chance of your death.) Envy wouldn't grow into hatred, and hatred wouldn't prompt a response to that hatred.
As we rapidly approach a time where we just literally have too many people on this planet, I find it pretty damn amusing that we still feel revulsion to people that try to make decisions on reason alone, while simultaneously lowering the chances of our species surviving by labeling things like interplanetary colonialism as fiscally irresponsible. If we're going to survive, we NEED people that make decisions based on numbers alone.
(Disclaimer, the next paragraph will talk abut how I got on this topic, it involves masturbation)
The thing that really got me thinking about all this was the realization that prior to an orgasm, I often think about exes or random pretty peeps I've met...Instead of my girlfriend, whom I love very very much. Post-orgasm, I always feel guilty about those thoughts, and hate myself a bit for having them. Maybe it's just part of human hubris that makes me hate how much chemicals I have no control over, are able to push me to do things that logic would dictate I shouldn't. "My species has created masterpieces of art, ungodly advances of technology, how on Earth could brain chemistry bring us to our knees?"
